Spirit Plate

APRIL 2023: We hosted Spirit Plate, an organization focused on revitalizing ancestral foodways. Through our ‘Cultural Cooking for Wellness’ workshop, Spirit Plate instructors shared the process of creating masa harina, emphasizing the intention put into preparing, grinding, and cooking the ingredients. With Spirit Plate, we at LA Commons envision the restoration of ancestral foodways, benefitting South LA residents with the long term health and cultural impacts of food sovereignty initiatives.

South LA In Dialogue

APRIL - JUNE 2023: LA Commons hosted a photography residency in Fremont in partnership with the Getty Museum, inspired by their photography exhibition, Dawoud Bey & Carrie Mae Weems: In Dialogue.Led by talented photographers Mercedes Carreto and Delaney George, twelve community members, including Fremont students and parents, learned basic photography skills, explored their neighborhoods, and photographed scenes representing community, culture, and wellness.

Art piece - Fremont Fence Medallions

SEPTEMBER 2023: Artists Raycasso and Dalila Mendez, in partnership with a team of young people, completed another round of colorful fence medallions visible from Avalon Blvd. These medallions tell the story of the Fremont community and provide a powerful vehicle for youth to take leadership in asserting local voices!

Tree Yoga Coop

NOVEMBER 2022: One of our favorite collaborators and South LA Cultural Treasure, Tree Yoga Cooperative, was able to lead local parents, youth, and neighbors in a gentle movement and stretch workshop while they waited in line for the UMMA Free Food Clinic. Fremont residents were able to take home fresh produce, engage in physical activities, and express their creativity at our artmaking table - feeding both the body and soul!

Wellness Festival

MAY 2023: Our very first workshop cycle culminated in an all-day Fremont Wellness Festival filled with programming for youth, parents, and community residents. Fremont High school students were able to eat tacos, participate in Afro-Peruvian, Flamenco, and Folkorico dance, view art created by local residents, and learn from UMMA Clinic educators about wellness during school hours. After the high school let out at 3pm, we opened up programming to the larger community to facilitate intergenerational community building and pride. This festival was a huge success, attracting over 500 participants!
