The presidential election has got us all on pins and needles. We’ve got to pay attention at the top of the ticket, but in Los Angeles there is so much more on the ballot. We are voting on the issues of our time, affordable housing and homelessness, but also protection from the impacts of climate change, local government reform and a host of other challenges - not to mention the races for elected seats at every level. LAist has a fantastic non-partisan voter guide to help us make sense of our ballots. What sounds fun to me is to invite friends over for dinner and together decipher the options and make a plan to vote which you can do starting this Saturday, October 26. Unlike some places around the country, LA County makes it easy to perform your civic duty. Visit lavote.gov for all the info. We are all counting on us!!
This Summer a book was released entitled Democracy as Creative Practice: Weaving A Culture of Civic Life. Edited by Tom Borrup and Andrew Zitcer, this title outlines how artists and cultural workers are playing a role in promoting democratic engagement across the spectrum. LA Commons has a chapter in the book describing our “Creating Our Next LA” project.
